Not far from Edinburgh Airport, set back from Glasgow Road, lies the site of Gogarburn Hospital. Closed in the summer of 1999 the wards of this long stay institution at one time accommodated upwards of 800 people labelled as having what is now termed learning disabilities.
Providing a flavour of what it was like to live, and work, in this hospital is the focus of this book. Combined with photographs and other historical documents we have tried to represent the histories and reflections of those who played a part in this project. The result is not the truth—there are many versions of them, more than we could explore—but hopefully a sense of the meaning of Gogarburn for a few, whose experiences may resonate with many.
