Our morning training session (10am–1pm) in reminiscence skills introduces creative activities and practical tools to help you connect with people, including those with dementia.
We use various techniques to spark memories: handling boxes, exploring photographs, listening to music, experiencing familiar smells, reading poetry, creating life story books, and even using YouTube as a resource. Over the past 30 years, we’ve seen how reminiscence can unlock memories, create connections, and bring a sense of belonging and emotional well-being to older people.
This training also gives participants a chance to share their own ideas and experiences of working with older people and those with dementia. Everyone responds to reminiscence differently, and it’s often about finding the right way in—and keeping at it.
For someone with dementia, it can be hard to recall who visited last week or hold a conversation. But the right prompts can unlock memories from their past and open the door to meaningful stories.
Think about a smell, taste, or sound from your childhood. Maybe it’s the smell of shoe polish, the taste of homemade lentil soup in your granny’s kitchen, or the feel of your mum’s hair before bedtime. It might be the jingle of the ice cream van or a favourite song. Moments like these can take you back in time, sparking memories you thought were forgotten.
We all reminisce naturally, asking questions like, ‘Do you remember?’ or, ‘What was that shop on the corner of Princes Street called?’ Our training formalises this instinct and shows you how to make it a powerful tool for working with groups and individuals.
By joining our Reminiscence Training, you’ll learn to run reminiscence sessions and help groups and individuals rediscover the stories that matter most to them.
By participating, you will:
- Develop group working skills and share ideas with others in the training group.
- Learn how to use artefacts, photographs, and memorabilia to spark memories.
- Build confidence in leading reminiscence sessions.
- Gain a deeper understanding of how dementia impacts memory and communication.
